Susan Sarandon Among Pro-Palestinian Protesters Arrested Outside UN
New York City police arrested pro-Palestinian demonstrators who blocked streets near the United Nations headquarters on Thursday, ahead of an address by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Among those detained was Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon. Emmy-winning actresses Cynthia Nixon and Hannah Einbinder were also arrested at the protest, which was also attended by actor Elliot Page.
Other notable arrests included Zahraan Mamdani, a mayoral advisor whose entry into Israel was recently denied; Dariaisla Avila Chevalier, a Democratic congressional candidate who won her primary; and WikiLeaks source Chelsea Manning.
The protesters were demonstrating against the ongoing conflict in Gaza and calling for a ceasefire. The arrests occurred as security was heightened around the UN building for Netanyahu's scheduled speech.
