Palestinian Convicted in Teen's Murder Dies in Israeli Prison

Yosef Haim Ben David, the primary suspect in the kidnapping and murder of teenager Muhammad Abu Khdeir, died today at the age of 42. Ben David, who was serving his sentence at the Sharon Prison, had recently felt unwell and was transferred for urgent medical treatment.

The Israel Prison Service confirmed his death and stated that a special team has been appointed to investigate the circumstances, as is customary in such cases. His medical details remain confidential.

Ben David, a resident of Jerusalem, was convicted in April 2016 of severe offenses including murder, kidnapping, and attempted arson. The district court rejected claims of insanity, with the presiding judge stating Ben David fully understood his actions and had the capacity to avoid committing them. The Supreme Court upheld his conviction and life sentence, plus twenty years, two years later. The justices noted the murder necessitated a profound societal reckoning with racism and found no grounds for leniency, reaffirming that any mental health issues Ben David suffered did not meet the threshold for diminished responsibility.

The murder of the Shuafat teenager occurred in the summer of 2014, shortly before Operation Protective Edge began, and was carried out in retaliation for the kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens: Naftali Fraenkel, Gil-Ad Shaer, and Eyal Yifrah. Law enforcement officials commented that the prisoner's death closes a chapter on one of the country's most difficult and painful cases, recalling the tense days of that summer. The Prison Service indicated the investigation into the cause of death will continue.
