Key Suspect in Muhammad Abu Khdeir Murder Dies
Yosef Haim Ben-David, the primary suspect in the murder of teenager Muhammad Abu Khdeir, has died. He was transferred from prison to a hospital, where his death was pronounced. Ben-David was sentenced to life imprisonment plus an additional 20 years by the Jerusalem District Court for the murder.
As part of his sentence, Ben-David was also ordered to pay NIS 20,000 in compensation to the family of a victim abducted the night before the murder, and NIS 150,000 to the Abu Khdeir family.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Yaakov Tzaban asked Ben-David if he wished to make a statement. Ben-David responded, "I apologize for what happened." He mentioned his past work with ZAKA, a volunteer rescue and recovery organization, stating, "I used to work at ZAKA and collected bodies of both Jews and Arabs. I always sanctified the image of man and the dignity of the deceased. I ask the family for forgiveness for everything that happened."
