Key Suspect in Jerusalem Teen's Murder Dies
Yosef Haim Ben-David, the main suspect convicted in the 2014 murder of Palestinian teenager Mohammed Abu Khdeir, died on Thursday. He had been transferred from prison to a hospital shortly before his death.
An Israeli court had previously ruled Ben-David fit to stand trial, determining that he did not suffer from mental health issues at the time of the crime and fully understood his actions. The Ministry of Justice stated at the time that the court found the defendant was aware of the facts and responsible for his deeds.
Ben-David was considered the primary instigator and perpetrator of the abduction and murder of Abu Khdeir, who was 16 years old. The crime occurred on July 2, 2014, in East Jerusalem. Three Israelis abducted Abu Khdeir, beat him, tortured him, doused him with gasoline, and set him on fire while he was still alive in a forest in West Jerusalem.
Ben-David's lawyers had submitted last-minute documents claiming he suffered from mental illness prior to his conviction.
