Convicted Killer of Teen and Soldier Dies in Israeli Prison After 40 Years
Atef Sbeih, who was serving a life sentence for the murders of teenager Danny Katz and soldier Dafna Carmon, died Thursday at the age of 68 in Rimonim-Ofek prison. The Israel Prison Service confirmed his death, stating that the circumstances are under investigation and that his medical condition is private.
Sbeih began serving his sentence in the 1980s for the 1983 murder of 14-year-old Danny Levi of Haifa, a case that shocked the public due to its brutality. In October 1985, Sbeih and four others were sentenced to life imprisonment plus 27 years.
Later, Sbeih and an accomplice, Ahmed Kozli, confessed to the 1982 kidnapping, rape, and murder of 21-year-old soldier Dafna Carmon. Sbeih had been incarcerated for approximately 40 years at the time of his death.
