Lorenzo Brown Nears Return to Israel with Hapoel Jerusalem

Veteran point guard Lorenzo Brown, 36, is reportedly on the verge of signing with Hapoel Jerusalem, marking a potential return to Israeli basketball after two years abroad. Brown previously played for Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he was a standout player, earning All-EuroLeague First Team honors in his first season and Second Team in his second, while winning two championships. He is considered one of the most popular guards to have played in Israel in the last decade.

Following his departure from Maccabi after the October 7th events, Brown signed a lucrative three-year deal with Panathinaikos Athens for an estimated €1.8 million per season. However, his tenure with the Greek club was challenging, with inconsistent playing time under coach Ergin Ataman. Despite a significant contract, Brown struggled to find a consistent role, often receiving limited minutes, particularly in crucial playoff games. He later moved to Olimpia Milano, but his time there was hampered by injuries and a coaching change, leading him to play very little in his final eight months with the team.

Brown reportedly had offers from other European clubs and even China, but chose to return to Israel, where he believes he played the best basketball of his career. He is expected to fill a key role for Hapoel Jerusalem, particularly in the absence of Jared Harper, who is anticipated to return from injury between November and February. Brown's strengths lie in his playmaking, especially his ability to involve big men, a skill that could benefit Hapoel Jerusalem's roster, including players like Kenny Lofton Jr.

While Brown is no longer the explosive player he once was, having lost some speed and his mid-range game diminishing, he is seen as a smart signing for Hapoel Jerusalem. The team is looking for a reliable point guard to elevate their play until Harper's return, rather than a player expected to carry the team offensively. Brown's experience and playmaking ability are expected to stabilize the team and integrate various pieces, offering a different style of play compared to Harper. He is considered a safe and proven option at the European level, even at his age.
