Police Announce Arrest in Killing of Alleged 'Caucasus Mafia' Boss

Police in Israel's Coastal District have announced the resolution of the August 23 assassination of Yanis Yushvaev in Caesarea. Yushvaev, described by media as the "head of the Caucasus mafia," was shot and killed outside a gas station eatery. Investigators, utilizing advanced technological, intelligence, and forensic methods, identified Doron Weitzman, a 54-year-old resident of Beit She'an, as the primary suspect within days of the murder. Weitzman's detention has been repeatedly extended by the court as the investigation progressed.

On September 22, investigators compiled sufficient evidence to file a preliminary declaration with the court, signaling their intent to indict. The Haifa District Prosecutor's Office, which oversaw the investigation, is expected to file an indictment in the Haifa Magistrate's Court in the coming days. They will also request that Weitzman be held in custody until the conclusion of his trial.

Yushvaev, whom police considered the leader of a criminal organization known as the "Caucasus mafia" operating in the Sharon region, had a history of arrests for suspected involvement in serious crimes. These included investigations into a series of car arsons in Or Akiva, a shooting at a businessman's home in Hadera, and another shooting in Or Akiva that injured a bystander. However, Yushvaev was often released without charges due to insufficient evidence.

Surveillance footage from the gas station shows the killer waiting for Yushvaev outside the eatery. The assailant is seen shooting Yushvaev in the head at close range as he turned his back.
