Police Solve Murder of Alleged Caucasus Crime Boss

Israeli police announced Tuesday the successful resolution of the assassination of Yanis Yushbayev, the alleged head of the "Caucasus Mafia," who was shot and killed at a gas station in Caesarea last month. Authorities have arrested a 54-year-old resident of Beit She'an in connection with the murder and plan to file charges in the coming days.

Yushbayev was considered a major target for law enforcement in the Sharon region and a central figure with deep ties to the organized crime group. Police described his killing as an "earthquake" in the criminal underworld, fearing it could trigger retaliatory violence. The suspect was apprehended shortly after the assassination.

Law enforcement officials identified Yushbayev as the leader of the "Caucasus Mafia," which primarily operated in the areas of Or Akiva, Hadera, and the Sharon region. He also managed businesses in the food and restaurant sectors. Despite repeated efforts by police to thwart his activities and link him to serious criminal incidents, Yushbayev was known as a difficult individual to prosecute.

Over the years, Yushbayev's name was associated with several criminal cases and violent incidents along the coast and in the Sharon area. These included arrests on suspicion of involvement in a wave of arson attacks targeting approximately 24 vehicles in Or Akiva, as well as suspected involvement in shooting incidents, including one that injured a civilian in Or Akiva and another targeting a businessman's home in Hadera. In 2015, Yushbayev himself was injured in a shooting incident.
