Suspect in 'Caucasus Mafia Boss' Murder Has Detention Extended

Israeli police announced on Thursday the second extension of detention for a suspect accused of murdering Yianis Yushbayev, known as the "Caucasus Mafia boss." The suspect's detention was extended by seven days, while another suspect's detention was extended by eight days. Both are expected to appear before a judge at the Haifa Magistrate's Court in the coming days.

Yushbayev was shot and killed outside a restaurant in Hadera after a business meeting. He was reportedly ambushed by a gunman as he was leaving for his car. Yushbayev was shot at close range, critically wounded, and rushed to Hillel Yaffe Medical Center in Hadera, where he was pronounced dead despite resuscitation efforts.

Yushbayev was a well-known figure in the criminal underworld, particularly in the Hadera area, where he had gained significant influence in recent years. His name had been linked to numerous criminal cases and disputes.

His former lawyer, Rotem Cohen, stated that most of Yushbayev's previous arrests did not lead to substantial evidence, resulting in his frequent release by courts. Cohen described Yushbayev as a legitimate businessman and a father of young children.

The investigation led police to a warehouse in Hadera, identified as the gunman's hideout, following a tip from a neighbor. The neighbor described hearing a loud noise and seeing men in military attire with helmets and weapons entering the warehouse. Police subsequently arrived and apprehended a man and a woman, who were then taken away in handcuffs with their eyes covered. A business owner nearby corroborated the account, describing a swift operation involving numerous armed officers who secured the building and apprehended the suspects.
