Police Release Caucasus Mafia Leader Despite Extensive Intel Before His Assassination

Yanis Yesubiev, known as the head of the Caucasus mafia in northern Israel, was assassinated yesterday. The police identified him as a central figure in organized crime around Hadera and Or Akiva, leading a network of close associates, alliances, and rivalries. Despite extensive intelligence and several arrests linked to him, authorities repeatedly failed to build a prosecutable case against Yesubiev, resulting in his release without indictment.

Yesubiev's criminal activities primarily spanned Or Akiva, Hadera, Caesarea, and the Sharon region. Police sources described an ongoing "world war" between Yesubiev and several business owners, rooted in disputes over business control, extortion, and coercion attempts. Investigations revealed incidents of shootings, grenade attacks, and arson connected to these conflicts. Between 2025 and 2026, police probed multiple shootings targeting a businessman’s home in Hadera, attributing them to this prolonged feud.

In October 2025, Yesubiev was arrested on suspicion of involvement in a shooting but was released to house arrest after the court denied police requests to bar him from the area. His defense argued he was abroad during the incident and no evidence linked him to the crime. Another key figure, Krasnopolsky, survived a near-fatal assassination attempt in October 2024 and later resumed activities alongside Yesubiev, highlighting the violent nature of their factional struggles.

Police portray Yesubiev not as a lone operator but as the leader of a local power hub with loyal followers and alliances. The core disputes reportedly involved business dominance, debts, extortion, and territorial battles. However, a persistent gap between police intelligence and legal proof hindered successful prosecution throughout his criminal career.
