Israel Football Association Slams Ireland Coach Over 'Genocide' Remark

The Israel Football Association has issued a sharp response to comments made by Iceland's Heimir Hallgrímsson, the coach of the Republic of Ireland national football team. Hallgrímsson stated ahead of a Nations League match that his team was playing "against genocide, not with genocide." The Israeli association, waiting until after Yom Kippur concluded, called his statement "pathetic" and "ignorant and hypocritical."

In their official response, the Israeli FA remarked, "We have managed to contribute to the world in many areas, including an impressive number of Nobel Prizes. Unfortunately, we have not yet found a cure for stupidity, ignorance, and hypocrisy as demonstrated by the coach of the Irish national team. We do not play with ignorance, hypocrisy, and stupidity, but against those who represent them as a coach."

Israel and Ireland are scheduled to play each other twice in the coming weeks as part of the Nations League. However, the Israeli team faces a demanding schedule with four matches in ten days. Their upcoming games include fixtures against Austria on September 24th, Ireland on September 27th in Debrecen, Hungary, Kosovo on October 1st, also in Debrecen, and a final match against Ireland on October 4th. This last game, designated as an "away" match, will be played in Bačka Topola, Serbia, as Ireland has declined to host Israel on its soil.

The team, led by coach Ran Ben Shimon, will be under strict security protocols due to Yom Kippur and heightened security measures. Players will largely remain confined to their hotels, only leaving for training and matches during their 17-day stay. This intense period, with limited exposure to the outside world, could impact player performance in these crucial games, which are also part of the qualification path for Euro 2028.
