Israel Football Association Slams Ireland Coach Over 'Genocide' Remarks

The Israel Football Association responded forcefully to comments made by Ireland national team coach Hákon Hallgrímsson, who stated his team was playing "against genocide" and "against Israel, not with Israel." The association, waiting until after Yom Kippur to issue a statement, called Hallgrímsson's remarks "pathetic" and a display of "ignorance, hypocrisy, and foolishness."

In their official response, the association stated, "We have managed to contribute to the world in many areas, including an impressive number of Nobel Prizes. Unfortunately, we have not yet found a cure for foolishness, ignorance, and hypocrisy as demonstrated by the coach of the Irish national team. We do not play with ignorance, hypocrisy, and foolishness, but against those who represent them as a coach."

Hallgrímsson made the controversial statements ahead of two upcoming UEFA Nations League matches between Israel and Ireland in the coming weeks. His comments came amid a months-long protest by Irish political groups calling for the boycott of the matches. The Irish coach defended his position, saying, "When people know that these games are going to take place, we will get the people who are willing to support us." He added that his job is to focus on football and protect his players from external noise, acknowledging he may have spoken out of turn.

Hallgrímsson admitted he had no prior experience dealing with such a situation and suggested he might have "fallen into some pits" and "said things I shouldn't have said." He expressed hope that his team could play good football despite the controversy.
