Israel Football Association Slams Ireland Coach Over 'Ignorance' Remarks

The Israel Football Association has issued a scathing response to comments made by Ireland national team coach, Heimir Hallgrímsson, ahead of upcoming UEFA Nations League matches between the two countries. Hallgrímsson had stated, "We don't play with genocide, we play against genocide. Therefore, we play against Israel, we don't play with Israel," and questioned why Russia was suspended from international competitions while Israel was not.

The Israeli FA retorted, "We have managed to contribute to the world in many areas, including an impressive number of Nobel Prizes. Unfortunately, we have not yet found a cure for stupidity, ignorance, and hypocrisy as demonstrated by the coach of the Irish national team. We do not play with ignorance, hypocrisy, and stupidity, but against those who represent them as a coach."

Hallgrímsson's remarks come amid significant pressure in Ireland to boycott the matches. Over 160 Irish sports figures, including rugby stars, Olympians, and former footballers, signed an open letter urging players to refuse participation. The letter, published by the group "Irish Sport for Palestine," called on players to "seize the moment" and "do the right thing."

Despite the calls for a boycott, the Football Association of Ireland confirmed the team will play both matches. CEO David Connellan stated Ireland would not act unilaterally, though the association continues to urge UEFA to suspend Israel from international competitions.

The two matches are scheduled for September 27 and October 4. Neither game will be played on home soil; the first will take place in Debrecen, Hungary, and the second in Bačka Topola, Serbia, both behind closed doors.
