Irish PM Backs National Soccer Coach Amid Genocide Accusations Against Israel

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has publicly supported Heimir Hallgrímsson, the coach of the Irish national soccer team, following Hallgrímsson's statements accusing Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip. Hallgrímsson, an Icelander, had stated before upcoming Nations League matches, "We do not play with genocide, we play against genocide. We play against Israel, we do not play with Israel." The Israeli Football Association responded strongly, calling Hallgrímsson's remarks "stupidity, ignorance, and hypocrisy" and asserting that Israel was playing against the coach, not the Irish people. Speaking in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Martin deemed the Israeli association's response "unacceptable" and called for its withdrawal. He stated that the coach's comments reflect concerns over the death toll and destruction in Gaza, adding, "Israel cannot continue to deny what the world knows." Ireland is known as one of Europe's strongest supporters of the Palestinian cause. The upcoming matches are highly controversial within Ireland, with over 160 athletes signing an open letter urging a boycott. Protests are also planned. The match initially scheduled for September 27, officially hosted by Israel, will take place in Debrecen, Hungary. The October 4 match, originally set for Ireland, has been moved to Backa Topola, Serbia, due to security concerns.
