Irish Prime Minister Criticizes Israeli Football Association Over Coach Remarks

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin has publicly called on the Israeli Football Association (IFA) to retract statements made against the Irish national team coach, Heimir Hallgrímsson, describing them as "unacceptable." The controversy erupted last week when Hallgrímsson commented on the upcoming Nations League match between Ireland and Israel, stating that Ireland would play "against genocide, not with genocide," and clarified, "We are playing against Israel, not with Israel."

The IFA responded sharply to Hallgrímsson's remarks. In a statement released late Monday, the association declared, "We have contributed to the world and humanity in countless areas, and along the way have won an impressive number of Nobel Prizes. Unfortunately, we have not yet found a cure for stupidity, ignorance, and hypocrisy displayed by the Irish national team coach." The IFA added, "We do not play with ignorance, hypocrisy, and stupidity. We play against the coach who embodies them."

Speaking to reporters at the UN General Assembly in New York, Martin defended his coach. "I think these are unacceptable remarks, and they should be retracted," he stated. The Prime Minister referenced UN Secretary-General António Guterres's comments on the scale of death and destruction in Gaza during the war following the Hamas attack, which Martin called "horrific." "Our coach is saying exactly the same thing, and Israel cannot continue to deny what the world knows and understands," he added, urging Israel to allow international media and world leaders into Gaza to witness the situation.

Martin highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, noting that two million people are living in a third of the original territory and describing the distress as "appalling." According to the Irish Independent, while reports in Israel suggested the IFA was considering a complaint to UEFA against Hallgrímsson, no such complaint had been filed by the time of publication. Israeli reports also indicated that national team players would not exchange jerseys with their Irish counterparts and had received instructions on how to respond to potential provocations.

The two matches between the teams will be played at neutral venues. Israel will host on Sunday in Debrecen, Hungary, while Ireland's home match will be held without spectators in Bačka Topola, Serbia, due to "operational challenges that could affect its staging on Irish soil," according to the Irish FA.
