IDF on High Alert for Yom Kippur Amid Iran Threat

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have heightened their readiness ahead of Yom Kippur, which began Sunday evening and concludes Monday, due to concerns over potential military actions. The IDF and Israel Police have finalized preparations for the holiday, deploying additional forces nationwide, particularly in sensitive areas and locations expecting large gatherings, according to the newspaper Maariv. Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir ordered reinforcements for several fronts, with extra companies assigned to the Northern, Southern, and Central commands. Senior officers will be stationed in each region throughout the holiday, and a general will be on duty at the Home Front Command headquarters, with a duty commander in each district. The Israeli Air Force has also increased its readiness by making more armed aircraft available, while the Navy has bolstered its sea presence with missile ships. Border security forces have been expanded. The IDF has also prepared to mobilize reserve companies if needed and will maintain heightened operational readiness at the General Staff level.

The report highlights Iran as a primary threat and a key focus for the Mossad and Military Intelligence Directorate (AMAN), with efforts reportedly underway to facilitate a change in power there, though the timeline remains uncertain. The IDF views Iran as its main strategic challenge. The heightened alert for Yom Kippur, encompassing all fronts, is seen as indicative of the seriousness of the situation. The Home Front Command's measures, including general and commander duty rotations, and the Air Force's increased aircraft readiness, underscore this.

Concurrently, the Israel Police are increasing their nationwide presence with thousands of officers, combatants, and volunteers, focusing on synagogues, holy sites, crowded areas, and major roads to maintain order and respond to incidents. Traffic patrols will enhance monitoring on intercity routes, including for cyclists and electric scooter riders. Earlier, the IDF Chief of Staff visited the Neve Tzuf area following a terror attack within the Benjamin Brigade's area of responsibility.
