Rabies Outbreak Confirmed in Harsham; Health Ministry Issues Urgent Warning

Israel's Ministry of Health has confirmed a rabies case in the community of Harsham, issuing an urgent warning to residents. The alert was triggered Friday after a dog was found to be infected with the rabies virus.

An epidemiological investigation is currently underway. The Ministry is urging anyone who had contact with the infected dog or with any stray animals in Harsham between September 1st and September 18th, 2026, to immediately contact the health bureau in Netanya or their local health office. This is to assess the need for preventative rabies treatment.

Outside of working hours and on weekends, individuals should report to the nearest hospital emergency room, without needing to schedule an appointment. The Ministry specifically requests that parents inquire with their children about any contact with the infected dog or other stray animals in the area and contact the health bureau if necessary.

Pet owners whose animals may have come into contact with the infected dog are advised to consult their local veterinarian for treatment guidelines. The Ministry also stressed the importance of sharing this information with anyone who was in the area or in nearby communities during the specified period.

In the event of a bite or scratch from an animal, the affected area should be immediately washed with soap and running water for approximately 10 minutes, disinfected, and prompt medical attention sought at a health bureau to evaluate the need for post-exposure rabies prophylaxis.
