Rabies Cases in Israel Reach Record High, Prompting Health Investigations

Israel has recorded 103 cases of rabies among animals since the beginning of the year, matching last year's negative record and potentially set to surpass it. The latest incident involved a rabid dog discovered in the community of Harmesh in the Samaria region, which had bitten three residents who attempted to help it. This event highlights a significant increase in diagnosed rabies cases, with health and veterinary authorities treating it with utmost seriousness due to the infected animal's presence within a populated area.

Epidemiological investigations are underway by the Ministry of Health to trace the infected dog's movements prior to the incident in Harmesh. Authorities are also examining a report from three days earlier of a dog attacking another local pet in the same area, to determine if it was the same animal and to identify any other potential human or animal exposures.

Dr. Michael Ettinger, chairman of the Veterinary Doctors Association, emphasized that a rabid dog entering a community and biting people constitutes a public health event. He warned that such cases should be viewed as part of a potential active chain of infection, not isolated incidents, especially given the rapid transmission from wildlife or stray dogs to humans.

The Ministry of Health is urging parents whose children were in the affected areas to check if they had contact with stray animals. Pet owners whose animals may have been exposed are advised to contact their local veterinarian immediately. The public is strongly cautioned against approaching injured or unusually behaving animals, and instead to report them to the authorities. In the event of a bite or scratch, immediate washing with soap and water, disinfection, and prompt medical attention for epidemiological assessment are crucial.
