Rabid Dog Sighting Near Shfaram Prompts Health Ministry Warning

Israel's Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday the detection of a rabid dog in an agricultural area near the northern city of Shfaram. The dog, described as a large, mixed-breed animal with black and brown coloring, has led to public health officials issuing a warning and urging caution.

Three individuals who had contact with the infected dog are currently receiving preventative treatment, while an epidemiological investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the case. The Ministry is urging anyone who may have come into contact with the dog, or any stray animal in the incident area, between August 28 and September 14, 2026, to immediately contact the health office in Acre or their nearest health office for an assessment of necessary preventative treatment.

For after-hours and weekend emergencies, individuals are advised to go directly to hospital emergency rooms without prior appointment. The Ministry also implored parents in the area to question their children about any potential contact with stray animals. Pet owners whose animals may have interacted with the rabid dog are instructed to consult their local veterinary authority for guidance.

In the event of a bite or scratch from any animal, the Ministry stressed the importance of immediately washing the wound with soap and running water for 10 minutes, followed by disinfection, and then seeking prompt medical evaluation at a health office for potential preventative treatment.
