Rabid Dog Confirmed Near Shefa-Amr, Health Ministry Issues Alert

The Israeli Ministry of Health reported on September 16 that a dog diagnosed with rabies was found in an agricultural area near the town of Shefa-Amr in the Western Galilee. The mixed-breed dog, described as large and brown-black in color, was present in the area between August 28 and September 14, 2026.

Three individuals who were exposed to the infected dog have been directed to receive preventative rabies treatment. An epidemiological investigation is ongoing.

The Ministry of Health is urging anyone who came into contact with the dog or any stray animals in the affected area between August 28 and September 14, 2026, to urgently contact the Acre Health Bureau at 04-9955138, or their local health bureau. For after-hours and weekend contact, individuals should go directly to a hospital emergency room.

Parents are asked to inquire with their children about any contact with the dog or stray animals in the area and to seek medical evaluation if necessary. Pet owners whose animals may have come into contact with the rabid dog are advised to consult their local veterinarian for guidance. The Ministry also requests that this information be shared with anyone who was in the area or nearby communities during the specified period.

In the event of a bite or scratch from an animal suspected of having rabies, the affected area should be immediately washed with soap and running water for approximately 10 minutes, disinfected, and medical attention sought promptly at a health bureau for evaluation of preventative treatment needs.
