Rabies Alert Issued After Dog Diagnosed in Northern Israel

Israel's Ministry of Health has issued an unusual warning following the diagnosis of rabies in a mixed-breed dog in the northern community of Ne'ala. Five individuals who had contact with the infected dog have been referred to the health bureau for consultation and potential preventative treatment against rabies. An epidemiological investigation is ongoing.

The Ministry is urging anyone who came into contact with the rabid dog or any stray animals in the area between September 1st and September 15th, 2026, to urgently contact the health bureau in Ramla or their local health office to assess the need for preventative rabies treatment. Outside of working hours and on weekends, individuals should report to a hospital emergency room without needing an appointment.

Additional guidelines have been released: Parents are advised to check with their children if they had contact with the dog or other stray animals in the area and to contact the health bureau if necessary. Pet owners whose animals may have had contact with the infected dog should consult their local veterinarian for treatment instructions. The public is also asked to share this information with anyone who was in the area or in nearby communities during the specified period.

The Ministry emphasized that in the event of a bite or scratch from an animal, the wound should be immediately washed with running water and soap for approximately 10 minutes, disinfected, and then promptly evaluated at a health bureau for potential preventative rabies treatment, again without the need for an appointment.
