ChatGPT Introduces Advertising to Israeli Users
OpenAI has launched advertising capabilities for ChatGPT users in Israel, allowing advertisers to target the local audience. Israeli users are now receiving notifications about updated privacy policies that permit advertisements to appear within the service. These ads will be visible on the Free tier and the Go plan, while paid subscriptions like Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education will remain ad-free.
Unlike search engines that rely on exact keyword matches, ChatGPT's advertising system uses "context hints." Advertisers provide general descriptions of conversation types where they wish their ads to be displayed. The system then matches the conversation's content and user history with the ad's text, images, context hints, and the advertiser's landing page. Ads are ranked based on relevance and bidding models.
OpenAI emphasizes a strict separation between its advertising system and the core language model. Advertisers cannot access user conversations or personal data. Ads are clearly marked as "Sponsored" and appear in a separate section below ChatGPT's responses, ensuring they do not influence the AI's generated content. Personalization is based solely on in-app data, such as conversation context or ad clicks, and this information is not shared externally.
Advertisers receive only aggregated performance metrics like impressions and clicks. Safeguards are in place, including options for users to disable ad personalization and review ad targeting reasons. Advertising is prohibited for users under 18 and for sensitive topics like health and politics. Ads are also automatically blocked if a conversation indicates emotional distress or a crisis.
