Israel Braces for Heatwave Ahead of Yom Kippur Holiday

Israel is set to experience a significant warming trend leading up to Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism, which falls next week. The Israeli Meteorological Service forecasts that temperatures will rise considerably above the seasonal average, making the day of the fast particularly challenging for those observing it.

Currently, the weather remains hotter than usual for this time of year, with mild heat expected even overnight. Inland and mountainous areas will be hot and dry, while the coastal plain will experience oppressive humidity. A brief, temporary respite is expected on Friday with a chance of local showers, mainly in the north, offering a slight break from the heat.

However, this cool-down will be short-lived. By early next week, coinciding with the approach of Yom Kippur, a substantial heatwave is predicted. This necessitates early preparation for those fasting, including staying in air-conditioned environments and drinking plenty of fluids before the fast begins to prevent dehydration.

Dr. Amir Givati, director of the Meteorological Service, indicated that more significant weather changes, potentially including substantial rain systems, are not expected until late September or October. He advised continued monitoring of forecasts due to the long-range nature of these predictions.

Specific temperature forecasts for Thursday include highs of 40°C in Eilat, 38°C in Tiberias, 37°C in Kiryat Shmona, 35°C in Beersheba, 34°C in Mitzpe Ramon, 33°C in Jerusalem and Safed, 31°C in Tel Aviv-Yafo and Ashdod, and 30°C in Haifa. Nighttime lows will range from 20°C to 27°C.
