Hamas Confirms Death of Top Commander in Gaza Strike
Hamas sources confirmed the death of Nael Abu Obeid, commander of the Rafah Brigade in the Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas. Abu Obeid was targeted in a strike late Tuesday evening while in a tent at a displacement camp in the Mawasi Khan Yunis area of southern Gaza.
Abu Obeid succeeded Muhammad Shabana as commander of the Rafah Brigade. Shabana was assassinated in May 2025 alongside Muhammad Al-Sinwar in a tunnel near the European Hospital. Abu Obeid was considered a close associate of Shabana and a veteran leader of the Qassam Brigades, having survived several previous assassination attempts.
Hamas has called on its members to attend Abu Obeid's funeral, scheduled for noon today. The announcement follows recent Israeli strikes that killed other Qassam Brigades leaders, including Muhammad Al-Yazouri, commander of the Khan Yunis Brigade, over a week ago, and Ahmad Al-Batsh, commander of the Jabalia Al-Balad battalion, on Monday evening.
