Israel Strikes Hamas's Rafah Brigade Commander in Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency conducted an airstrike in southern Gaza on Tuesday evening, targeting a senior Hamas official. The joint statement confirmed the strike against a "senior terrorist in the Hamas terror organization in the southern Gaza Strip," identified as Nael Abu Abed, the commander of Hamas's Rafah Brigade. While it has not been confirmed whether the assassination attempt was successful, a senior security official indicated that it appears to have succeeded. Palestinian reports stated the attack occurred in the Al-Mawasi area, west of Khan Younis, resulting in two deaths and 14 injuries. One report suggested the strike involved a suicide drone followed by two missiles from an aircraft, hitting two adjacent tents. The IDF and Shin Bet have not yet released further details on the attack's outcome.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant issued a joint statement, asserting, "The IDF has now attacked the commander of the Rafah Brigade in the Hamas terror organization, following the elimination earlier this week of the commander of the Khan Younis Brigade and other senior officials in the organization. Our message is clear: no terrorist is immune, and Hamas will not be in Gaza. We strengthen the IDF and the Shin Bet, who are acting decisively to remove threats and protect the citizens of Israel."

The strike follows the recent elimination of Mohammed Yazouri, commander of Hamas's Khan Younis Brigade. According to the IDF and Shin Bet, Yazouri held various positions, including deputy commander of the Khan Younis Brigade, commander of the Combat Support Battalion, and head of intelligence for the brigade. He was reportedly responsible for managing the brigade's operatives and directing terror activities against Israeli forces and civilians.

Recent days have also seen the reported elimination of other senior Hamas figures. The IDF and Shin Bet announced the killing of Ahmed Batsh, commander of the Jabalia Battalion in the northern Gaza Strip's brigade, who was allegedly promoting terror plots and attempting to rebuild the organization's capabilities while systematically violating the ceasefire. Additionally, the IDF reported the elimination of Mukhsin Abu Daaif, head of a rocket cell in Palestinian Islamic Jihad, who allegedly participated in the October 7th raid on the Kissufim area.
