Dietitians Offer Tips for Hydration Ahead of Yom Kippur Fast
As Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, approaches on September 20, Israelis are preparing for the 25-hour fast. Dietitians are providing guidance to help manage thirst, a common challenge during the observance. Key advice includes increasing water intake significantly in the 24 hours leading up to the fast, aiming for at least 10 glasses, and continuing to drink until the fast begins. To make water more appealing, suggestions include adding chilled fruit cubes, lemon slices, or mint leaves to enhance flavor and color, thereby encouraging more consumption.
Experts strongly advise against consuming caffeinated beverages like coffee and cola, as caffeine acts as a diuretic, leading to increased fluid loss and exacerbating thirst. It is recommended to reduce caffeine intake for three days prior to the fast to mitigate potential dehydration headaches. Similarly, alcohol consumption should be avoided in the days preceding Yom Kippur, as it also contributes to dehydration and thirst.
Dietary adjustments are also recommended. Reducing the intake of salt, spices, and sugar in meals is advised, as these elements intensify the sensation of thirst. This includes limiting the use of ready-made sauces and bouillon powders. Consuming excessive sweets should also be postponed until after the fast concludes, as they too increase thirst. Yom Kippur begins around 6:00 PM on Sunday, September 20, and ends around 7:10 PM on Monday, September 21.
