Yom Kippur Fast: Health Experts Advise Hydration Strategy
As Yom Kippur approaches, Israeli health organizations are providing guidance on how to prepare for the approximately 25-hour fast. The primary recommendation is to drink at least 10 glasses of unsweetened beverages, with water being the preferred choice, throughout the day preceding the fast. This hydration should be spread out gradually rather than consumed in large quantities just before the fast begins.
Experts also advise a gradual reduction in caffeine intake and avoiding foods and drinks that can increase thirst, such as salty foods and sugary beverages. While balanced meals should be consumed during the day, overeating at the pre-fast meal is discouraged, as it does not necessarily make the fast easier.
These recommendations are intended for healthy individuals. Those with chronic illnesses, taking regular medication, or in special medical conditions are strongly advised to consult their physician before observing the fast. The core advice for a healthy person is to hydrate proactively and consistently to ensure the body is well-replenished with fluids by the start of Yom Kippur.
