Israir Launches Inaugural Flight to New York, Intensifying Competition

Israeli airline Israir launched its first flight to New York City late Thursday night, marking its entry into long-haul international travel. The flight departed from Ben Gurion Airport at midnight, commencing Israir's operations on a route highly popular with Israeli travelers.

This move signifies Israir's expansion into a competitive market, joining existing Israeli carriers Arkia and El Al, as well as international airlines like United Airlines and Delta, which recently resumed flights to Israel. The airline, owned by businessman Rami Levy, has spent nearly a year preparing for this expansion, including acquiring aircraft and handling the necessary logistics for long-distance routes.

Israir plans to further broaden its international network in the future, with potential destinations in the East including Thailand and Japan. The company also intends to add a third aircraft, an Airbus A330, to its fleet to support these extended routes.

Analysis of current ticket prices indicates round-trip fares on the New York route range from approximately $1,164 to an average of $1,400, typically including checked baggage, a meal, and seat selection. New York has become a sought-after destination for both business and leisure travelers from Israel in recent years, making competition on this route particularly significant, especially given the high cost of airfare.
