Defense Minister Katz Urges Opposition Leader Lapid to Back IDF Budget Increase

Defense Minister Israel Katz has directly appealed to Opposition Leader Yair Lapid, demanding immediate support for a crucial budget increase for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Katz emphasized the urgent need for legislative approval in the Knesset to ensure the IDF's continued operational capacity.

In his appeal, Katz detailed the military's pressing needs, including enhanced payments for reservists, maintaining security zones along the borders, acquiring munitions, restoring the IDF's readiness for ongoing operations, and bolstering domestic defense industries for both offensive and defensive capabilities against emerging threats. He stressed the critical nature of these security challenges, stating that the regional reality necessitates immediate action and cannot accommodate delays.

Katz warned that any postponement in allocating the required resources could directly impact the IDF's preparedness and the security of Israeli citizens. He called for the issue of the IDF's budget to be removed from routine political disputes, asserting that the necessary funds are available within the state treasury and do not require tax increases or cuts to other budget items. He specifically noted that the current economic situation is sound, but formal Knesset legislation is needed.

Recalling past cooperation, Katz reminded Lapid of his support during the COVID-19 pandemic when Katz served as Finance Minister. He expressed regret that Lapid is now refusing a similar request for defense funding, despite the IDF's significant achievements and ongoing operational needs in various arenas.
