Defense Minister Urges Opposition Leader to Back IDF Budget Increase

Defense Minister Israel Katz has publicly called on Opposition Leader Yair Lapid to support the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) request for an urgent budget supplement. Katz cited "dramatic security challenges" facing the nation, emphasizing that the evolving regional threats necessitate immediate action to ensure the IDF's readiness.

"The regional reality does not allow us to wait: threats are developing, our enemies continue to act, and we must ensure the IDF is prepared and equipped for any eventuality," Katz stated. He warned that delaying the necessary resources could directly impact the IDF's preparedness and the security of Israeli citizens, urging Lapid to support the request through agreed-upon Knesset legislation.

The requested budget increase is intended for several key purposes, including higher payments for reservists, maintaining security zones for border residents, acquiring munitions, restoring the IDF's operational capacity, and bolstering domestic defense industries for both offensive and defensive capabilities.

Katz clarified that the required funds are available in the treasury and the economic situation is sound, stressing that the need is for formal Knesset legislation, not tax increases or other budget adjustments. He appealed to Lapid not to link security matters to typical political debates over budget items, recalling Lapid's support for COVID-19 related expenses when Katz was Finance Minister and Lapid led the opposition.

Lapid, however, met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier the same day regarding the budget. According to Lapid's office, he expressed support for strengthening the IDF but conditioned his backing on the funding source not being tax hikes on the middle class and reservists. Lapid proposed canceling "corrupt coalition funds" and billions allocated to the Haredi sector as an alternative, stating his support would be contingent on such changes.

The Likud party responded by calling Lapid's claims "baseless and false," asserting that state revenues are exceeding expectations, allowing for a defense budget increase without new taxes. They also refuted Lapid's statements about coalition and Haredi funding, accusing him of "cheap political considerations" and endangering national security.
