Defense Minister Katz Urges Opposition Leader Lapid to Back IDF Budget Increase
Defense Minister Israel Katz has called on Opposition Leader Yair Lapid to support the Israel Defense Forces' (IDF) request for an additional budget allocation, proposing a joint legislative effort in the Knesset.
Katz emphasized that the current dramatic security challenges and regional realities necessitate immediate action, warning that delays in resource allocation could jeopardize the army's readiness and the safety of Israeli citizens. He stated that the required funds are available within the treasury and do not necessitate tax increases, urging that national security be kept separate from political debate.
The Defense Minister recalled that during the COVID-19 pandemic, when he served as Finance Minister, Lapid supported all emergency expenditures. Katz expressed regret that Lapid is now refusing a similar request amidst an ongoing security campaign.
