Health Ministry Launches Major Winter Preparedness Campaign

As the winter season approaches, Israel's health system is preparing for an anticipated rise in respiratory illnesses. The Ministry of Health is urging the public, especially those at high risk, to get vaccinated against the flu. Vaccinations are now available at healthcare providers nationwide, following a large-scale operation by the Ministry that distributed vaccines to approximately 400 locations.

Healthcare providers have been instructed to prepare for the season, with the Ministry of Health issuing directives for hospitals and health funds regarding winter readiness. These guidelines, open for public comment until next week, address the expected increase in illnesses, particularly influenza, COVID-19, and RSV. Hospitals are required to bolster staffing, separate patients with respiratory symptoms, and implement protective measures as needed to manage potential patient surges.

Health funds are also tasked with expanding vaccination sites, promoting awareness among members, and preparing to extend operating hours and utilize telehealth services. The Ministry's flu vaccine distribution campaign has already begun, reaching around 400 sites including geriatric facilities, sheltered housing, and Ministry of Welfare disability centers. Tamiflu is also being distributed to geriatric institutions to aid at-risk populations.

The directives also cover COVID-19 and pneumococcal vaccinations according to medical guidelines, completion of routine childhood immunizations, and flu vaccinations for healthcare workers. Dr. Hagar Mizrahi, head of the Ministry of Health's Medical Division, emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating, "Alongside the preparations of hospitals and health funds, we call on the public, and especially on at-risk populations, to get vaccinated against the flu in advance. The vaccine significantly reduces the risk of severe illness and complications."
