Israel Prepares for Winter Flu Season with Vaccination Push

As the winter season approaches, Israel's Ministry of Health is urging the public, especially those in high-risk groups, to get vaccinated against the flu. Vaccines are now available at healthcare providers nationwide, and the ministry emphasizes the importance of early immunization to prevent severe illness and complications.

In parallel, the ministry has issued directives to hospitals and health maintenance organizations (HMOs) outlining winter preparedness measures. These guidelines, open for public comment until next week, focus on anticipating an increase in respiratory illnesses, including influenza, COVID-19, and RSV. Hospitals are instructed to bolster staffing, segregate patients with respiratory symptoms, and utilize protective equipment as needed.

HMOs have been directed to expand vaccination sites, promote public awareness campaigns, and prepare for extended operating hours and increased use of remote healthcare services to strengthen community-based care. A campaign to distribute flu vaccines to approximately 400 locations, including geriatric facilities and sheltered housing, began last week to ensure accessibility for at-risk populations. The drug Tamiflu is also being distributed to geriatric institutions.

The directives also cover COVID-19 and pneumococcal vaccinations, routine childhood immunizations, and flu vaccinations for healthcare workers. Dr. Hagar Mizrahi, head of the Ministry of Health's Medical Division, stated, "Winter annually brings an increase in respiratory illnesses and strain on the healthcare system, making early preparation crucial. Alongside hospital and HMO readiness, we urge the public, particularly at-risk populations, to get vaccinated against the flu early. The vaccine significantly reduces the risk of severe illness and complications."

Last winter saw severe flu cases, including the death of a five-year-old boy and four women admitted to intensive care with flu complications, highlighting the critical need for prompt vaccination, especially for the elderly, pregnant women, young children, and individuals with pre-existing conditions.
