Health Ministry Urges Flu Vaccination Ahead of Winter Season

As the winter season approaches, Israel's Ministry of Health is urging the public, especially those in high-risk groups, to get vaccinated against the flu without delay. The vaccines are readily available at healthcare providers across the country. The ministry has also issued directives to hospitals and health maintenance organizations (HMOs) for winter preparedness, with public comments due by next week. These preparations aim to manage the anticipated rise in respiratory illnesses, particularly influenza, COVID-19, and RSV.

Hospitals are instructed to bolster staffing, segregate patients with respiratory symptoms, and utilize protective equipment as needed to handle increased patient loads. HMOs are directed to expand vaccination sites, promote awareness among members, and prepare for extended operating hours and increased use of remote medical services to strengthen community-based care.

To ensure accessibility for at-risk populations, a campaign has begun to distribute flu vaccines to approximately 400 locations nationwide, including geriatric facilities, sheltered housing, and Ministry of Welfare institutions for individuals with disabilities. The antiviral drug Tamiflu is also being distributed to geriatric facilities. The guidelines also cover vaccinations for COVID-19 and pneumococcus according to medical recommendations, completion of routine childhood immunizations, and flu vaccinations for healthcare workers.

Dr. Haggar Mizrahi, head of the Ministry of Health's Medical Division, emphasized the importance of early preparation for the annual increase in respiratory illnesses and healthcare system strain during winter. She reiterated the call for the public, particularly vulnerable groups, to get vaccinated against the flu, noting that the vaccine significantly reduces the risk of severe illness and complications.
