Israel Prepares for Winter Respiratory Illness Surge

Israel's Ministry of Health is preparing for an anticipated rise in respiratory illnesses this winter, including influenza, COVID-19, and RSV. The ministry has issued directives to hospitals and health maintenance organizations (HMOs) to ready themselves for increased patient loads. Hospitals are instructed to bolster professional staffing, segregate patients with respiratory symptoms, and utilize protective equipment as needed. HMOs are directed to expand vaccination site availability, promote public awareness about vaccinations, and potentially extend operating hours and remote medical services.

The Ministry is urging the public, especially those in at-risk groups, to get vaccinated against the flu promptly, as flu vaccines are already available. A campaign to distribute flu vaccines to approximately 400 locations nationwide has commenced, with special attention to geriatric institutions, sheltered housing, and disability frameworks within the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs and Social Services to ensure accessibility for vulnerable populations. The medication Tamiflu is also being distributed to geriatric facilities.

Further recommendations include addressing vaccinations for COVID-19 and pneumococcus according to medical guidelines, ensuring children complete their routine immunizations, and encouraging healthcare workers to get the flu vaccine. Dr. Hagar Mizrahi, head of the Ministry of Health's Medical Division, emphasized the importance of early preparation for the annual winter increase in respiratory illnesses and strain on the healthcare system. She reiterated the call for public vaccination, particularly for at-risk groups, to reduce the risk of severe illness and complications.
