Actor Dan Turgeman's Prison Sentence Increased to 10 Months

The Tel Aviv District Court has increased the prison sentence for actor Dan Turgeman from nine months of community service to ten months of actual imprisonment. The court accepted the prosecution's appeal against the leniency of the initial sentence, which was handed down by a lower court.

Turgeman was convicted in 2025, based on his plea agreement, of a series of tax offenses committed between 2008 and 2017. These offenses included failing to report income from real estate ventures and property rentals, as well as concealing assets. Notably, a property he substantially owned was registered under another person's name, and capital gains tax was not paid upon its sale. The indictment stated these actions were deliberate attempts to evade taxes through fraud and deceit.

The lower court had initially set a sentencing range of 12 to 28 months of imprisonment but deviated from it, sentencing Turgeman to nine months of community service, plus a suspended sentence and a NIS 100,000 fine. The court cited the passage of time since the offenses were committed as a primary reason for this leniency.

The prosecution appealed, emphasizing Turgeman's systematic and prolonged pattern of tax evasion over 12 years, involving various methods and significant amounts. They highlighted his active measures to hide income, such as not issuing invoices, not fully reporting his business activities, and concealing information from his accountant.

The district court panel, consisting of Deputy President Judge Shai Yaniv, Judge Yossi Tof, and Judge Dana Amir, ruled that tax evasion offenses committed with intent to evade payment necessitate actual imprisonment, and the passage of time does not justify deviating from this principle. While increasing his sentence, the judges noted that the appellate court was not imposing the maximum possible penalty.
