Actor Dan Turgeman Sentenced to 10 Months in Prison for Tax Offenses

The Tel Aviv District Court has overturned a previous ruling, sentencing actor Dan Turgeman to 10 months of actual prison time for tax offenses committed between 2008 and 2017. The court accepted the prosecution's appeal against the leniency of the initial sentence, which had been nine months of community service. Turgeman was convicted, based on his plea bargain, of omitting income from real estate ventures, marketing, and apartment rentals, as well as failing to pay capital gains tax on a property sale.

The prosecution argued that Turgeman engaged in a systematic, long-term pattern of tax evasion, actively concealing income and using deceitful methods. The initial lower court had suggested a sentencing range of 12 to 28 months but deviated, imposing community service primarily due to the time elapsed since the offenses. The prosecution appealed this decision, emphasizing the prolonged nature and scale of the tax evasion.

The district court judges stated that tax offenses committed with intent to evade taxes necessitate actual prison sentences, and the passage of time does not justify deviating from this principle. The court reduced Turgeman's fine from NIS 100,000 to NIS 50,000. Turgeman is scheduled to begin serving his sentence in March and expressed shock and surprise, calling the sentence "surreal and exaggerated" given the age of the offenses.
