Actor and Developer Dan Turgeman Sentenced to 10 Months in Prison for Tax Offenses

Actor and real estate developer Dan Turgeman has been sentenced to 10 months in actual prison for tax offenses, a decision handed down by the Tel Aviv District Court. The court accepted the prosecution's appeal against the leniency of the initial sentence, which was 9 months of community service. Turgeman was convicted of failing to report 3.7 million shekels in income from real estate ventures and rental properties, and evading approximately 135,000 shekels in capital gains tax.

The offenses, committed between 2008 and 2017, were part of a plea deal. Turgeman also failed to report capital gains tax on a property in the settlement of Beit Aryeh, which was registered in his ex-wife Anat Atzmon's name but effectively owned by him. He received the full purchase amount of 1.725 million shekels in 2011, but the property's registration allowed him to evade taxes.

Initially, a lower court had set a sentencing range of 12 to 28 months in prison but ultimately imposed 9 months of community service and a 100,000 shekel fine, citing the time elapsed since the offenses. The prosecution appealed, arguing Turgeman engaged in a systematic, long-term pattern of tax evasion involving significant sums and various methods, including active concealment of income.

The District Court, comprising Deputy President Judge Shi Yaniv, Judge Yossi Tof, and Judge Dana Amir, emphasized that tax evasion offenses committed with intent require actual prison sentences, regardless of the time passed. While acknowledging Turgeman's "heavy personal and economic circumstances," they reduced his fine by half to 50,000 shekels. Turgeman is scheduled to begin his sentence in March 2027 at Nitzan Prison.
