Israeli Actor Dan Turgeman Sentenced to Prison for Tax Evasion

The Tel Aviv District Court has sentenced well-known Israeli actor Dan Turgeman, star of the series "Touching Happiness," to 10 months in prison for tax offenses. The court increased his sentence from the initial nine months of community service, following an appeal by the prosecution. Turgeman was found guilty of tax crimes committed between 2008 and 2017, which involved concealing income from business, real estate, and rental activities. He also failed to pay property appreciation tax when selling real estate that was registered under another person's name.

The prosecution argued that Turgeman's actions constituted a systematic and prolonged pattern of large-scale tax evasion over 12 years, involving various methods and active concealment of income. The district court judges agreed with the prosecution's appeal, emphasizing that tax crimes committed with the intent to evade taxes necessitate real prison time, regardless of the time elapsed.

While the prison sentence was increased, the court reduced Turgeman's fine from 100,000 shekels to 50,000 shekels. Turgeman, who had previously reached a plea agreement with the prosecution, will begin serving his sentence in March 2027. He expressed shock and surprise at the verdict, telling Ynet that he believed the matter was concluded and found the sentence disproportionate given the age of the offenses.
