State Prosecutor Appeals Lenient Sentence for Sex Offender

Israel's State Prosecutor's Office has appealed a lenient sentence handed down to a 60-year-old Ashkelon man convicted of indecent acts against a 13-year-old girl. Moshe Sendrossi was sentenced to nine months of community service as part of a plea deal, but prosecutors are now seeking a prison sentence.

In their appeal to the Beersheba District Court, prosecutors argued that protecting minors from sex offenses requires a clear, appropriate, and severe punishment. They stated that Sendrossi, who knew the girl as a neighbor and through his daughters, exploited her trust when she visited his home. The indictment alleges he touched and kissed her on the balcony.

Sendrossi pleaded guilty and was convicted based on the plea agreement. During the sentencing phase in the Ashkelon Magistrate's Court, the prosecution had already requested a prison term. The victim's mother had previously stated that children are fragile and need to feel safe, emphasizing the need for a punishment that deters others.

Lawyer Mazal Menashe Kasaon, representing the prosecution, highlighted that Sendrossi's actions constituted a fundamental breach of trust, given the age gap and his exploitation of the minor's innocence. The appeal also noted the significant harm caused to the victim's well-being, bodily integrity, dignity, and health. The prosecution contends that the current sentence does not reflect the severity of the acts and that a harsher penalty is necessary to remove sex offenders from society and send a clear message to victims who bravely come forward.
