Dacia Duster Hybrid 4x4 Tackles Israeli Desert in First Off-Road Test

The Dacia Duster has launched a new hybrid automatic 4x4 version in Israel, aiming to overcome its previous limitation of manual transmission for off-road enthusiasts. This latest iteration, tested in the challenging Negev desert conditions, features a 1.2-liter 140 hp engine powering the front wheels and a 31 hp electric motor for the rear, delivering a combined 150 hp. The vehicle performed impressively in extreme heat and sandy terrain, navigating dunes and difficult paths without overheating, a feat that challenged more expensive off-road vehicles.

The Duster, priced at 171,000 NIS for the Discover trim and 158,000 NIS for the Adventure trim, is no longer the cheapest option but offers significant off-road capability for its segment. While the interior materials are basic compared to competitors, the car boasts practical features like a 10.1-inch infotainment screen, good air conditioning, and a unique YouClip accessory system. However, safety features are somewhat lacking, with the car receiving only a 3-star Euro NCAP rating.

Off-road performance is a strong point, with good ground clearance and approach/departure angles. While lacking a low-range gear, the hybrid system and electric motor provide sufficient power for moderate off-roading, though challenging rocky terrain or deep sand requires careful driving and potentially aftermarket upgrades like underbody protection and lift kits. Fuel economy is excellent on the road, averaging around 16.5 km/l in mixed driving, but significantly decreases in demanding off-road conditions, consuming 1 liter per 5-6 km in deep sand.

The Duster's hybrid system, adapted from Renault-Nissan, proved reliable during the demanding test, maintaining consistent performance even under extreme stress. While the transmission can occasionally feel less smooth at low speeds, its overall function is commendable. The article notes that while the Duster is capable of tackling most Israeli dune terrains, its standard tires are not ideal for such conditions, suggesting upgrades for serious off-roaders. The vehicle's overall concept remains focused on providing accessible off-road capability for families, continuing its legacy as a practical and unpretentious vehicle.
