Dacia Duster 4x4 Automatic Hybrid Offers Rugged Simplicity

The Dacia Duster, known for its unpretentious and rugged appeal, has introduced a highly anticipated combination: a 4x4 drivetrain paired with an automatic transmission, now also featuring a full hybrid system. This new iteration aims to satisfy customer demand for greater convenience without sacrificing the vehicle's off-road capabilities.

The exterior design remains tough, with prominent plastic elements and Y-shaped lighting signatures. Inside, the cabin continues the rugged theme with angular designs, durable, hard plastics, and a driver-focused dashboard. While the materials are basic, the build quality appears solid, and the ergonomics are functional, though somewhat dated, retaining features like the radio control stalk behind the steering wheel.

Space is adequate for passengers, and the 439-liter cargo area is practical, complete with a full-size spare tire. However, rear air vents are absent, and storage compartments are small. Ride comfort in the city is decent, absorbing most bumps, but sharp impacts are noticeable. On inter-city roads, the ride improves with good stability and reasonable noise insulation.

Performance is driven by a 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder hybrid engine producing a combined 150 horsepower and 23.45 kgm of torque, achieving 0-100 km/h in 9.2 seconds. The hybrid system, coupled with a smart automatic transmission, offers responsive acceleration after an initial delay. Driving modes include Eco, Auto, Snow, Sand/Mud, and Off-road, enhancing its versatility. While safe and controlled on the road, its true strength lies off-road, with impressive approach angles (31 degrees) and ground clearance (20.9 cm), aided by hill descent control and an electronic differential lock simulation.

Fuel economy during the test averaged 14.7 km/liter, falling short of expectations for a hybrid, especially after off-road driving. Dacia offers the Duster 4x4 Automatic in three trims: the basic 'Adventure', the mid-range 'Ultimate' (recommended for its balance of features and price), and the top 'Discover'. Despite basic safety features and less premium materials, the Duster's appeal lies in its straightforward, capable, and accessible package for those prioritizing off-road adventure over luxury gadgets.
