Senior Sergeant Major Alexandr Filin was killed in southern Lebanon. He had come to Israel alone from Ukraine 14 years ago through the Naaleh program, later enlisted in the IDF, and in 2018 received a Presidential Outstanding Soldier award on Israel’s 70th Independence Day.
That honor came two years after Filin had foiled a stabbing attack at a checkpoint in Nablus by neutralizing the assailant. The article says his wife learned of his death while she was abroad.
