South Port of Ashdod Reaches First Labor Agreement Without Dispute

The Histadrut labor union, the management of South Port (HCT), and employee representatives have signed a new collective labor agreement for approximately 400 port workers. The agreement, which includes salary increases, expanded welfare benefits, and a productivity-based reward system, was finalized after the completion of the new port's establishment and trial period. This marks the first collective agreement for the workers during the port's ongoing operational phase.

Unlike situations at other Israeli ports, this agreement was reached without labor disputes or threats of strikes. The new terms provide salary raises and increased employer contributions to daycare and summer camp funding. Additionally, the welfare budget has been expanded, and company retreats and other benefits have been formalized.

A key component of the agreement is a reward mechanism tied to employee productivity, designed to link operational performance and activity levels to worker compensation. Another element focuses on professional development, offering additional rewards for employees who pursue further training and certifications.

The agreement comes as the South Port, established in Ashdod and operational since 2021, solidifies its position within Israel's newly competitive port sector. Its development, alongside the Bay Port in Haifa, aims to increase competition and redistribute activity among the ports, shifting from a long-standing reliance on older facilities.

For the port's owners, the new compensation model directly impacts costs and labor productivity. While wages and benefits will rise, a portion of the rewards is linked to performance, meaning the agreement's overall economic effect will depend on its ability to boost the port's activity and operational output.
