Rabid Jackal Confirmed in Northern Israel; Public Urged to Seek Treatment

Ministry of Health
Translated & summarized from Ministry of Health by baba
The story · English

Israel's Ministry of Health announced on September 8, 2026, that a jackal found in Kfar Hittim, in the Lower Galilee Regional Council, has tested positive for rabies. The epidemiological investigation is ongoing, and currently, no direct contacts have been identified.

Individuals who may have come into contact with the infected jackal, or with other stray animals in the area, between August 23 and September 6, 2026, are urged to contact the Kinneret Health Bureau immediately at 04-6710300 or their nearest health office. This is to assess the need for preventative treatment. During evenings and weekends, individuals should report to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Parents are asked to inquire with their children about any contact with suspicious animals and to seek health bureau consultation if necessary. Pet owners are advised to contact their local veterinarian to confirm their animals' vaccination status.

The Ministry of Health is requesting that information about this incident be disseminated to visitors in the area and nearby communities. The ministry also reiterated its guidance for anyone bitten or scratched by an animal: immediately wash the wound with soap and running water, disinfect the area, and contact a health bureau to determine if post-exposure prophylaxis for rabies is required.
