Rabid Jackal Found in Upper Galilee Prompts Public Health Alert

Israel's Ministry of Health announced on Monday, September 7, 2026, the discovery of a jackal infected with rabies in the town of Ma'ayan Baruch in the Upper Galilee. An epidemiological investigation is ongoing, and no individuals who may have come into contact with the infected animal have been identified yet. The ministry is urging anyone who may have encountered the jackal, or any animals that might have been in contact with it, particularly between August 20 and September 3, to seek immediate medical evaluation for potential preventative rabies treatment.

Individuals who had direct contact with the infected jackal, or whose pets may have touched it, are advised to go to the health office in Safed or their nearest health clinic. The ministry emphasized the importance of prompt assessment, even outside of regular working hours or on weekends, by visiting a hospital emergency room if necessary.

The Ministry of Health is also calling on parents to inquire with their children about any contact with potentially sick animals. Pet owners are advised to consult their local veterinarian to ensure their animals are vaccinated. The public, including hikers and visitors in the area and nearby towns, is being informed to raise awareness.

In the event of a bite or scratch, the ministry reiterated the immediate steps: wash the wound thoroughly with running water and soap, disinfect the area, and then proceed to a health office for evaluation. The ongoing investigation aims to determine if any other people or animals were exposed during the specified period.
