Rabid Jackal Found in Northern Israel Prompts Health Ministry Warning

Israel's Ministry of Health announced on September 8, 2026, the discovery of a jackal infected with rabies in the community of Kfar Hittim, located within the Lower Galilee Regional Council. The ministry is currently conducting an epidemiological investigation to determine if any individuals have had contact with the infected animal. Residents who may have come into contact with the jackal, or any stray animals in the area, between August 23 and September 6, 2026, are urged to immediately contact the Tiberias (Kinneret) Health Office or their nearest health office for potential preventative treatment. After hours and on weekends, individuals should report to the nearest hospital emergency room.

The Ministry of Health is specifically requesting parents to inquire about any contact their children may have had with suspicious animals and to seek immediate medical attention if necessary. Pet owners are advised to consult their local authority veterinarian to confirm their animals' vaccination status. The ministry also emphasized the importance of disseminating this information to anyone visiting or vacationing in the affected area and surrounding communities.

In a reminder, the Ministry of Health reiterated that anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the wound with soap and running water, disinfect it, and seek medical advice regarding rabies treatment. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
