Rabid Jackal Found in Upper Galilee; Health Ministry Seeks Public Contact

Israel's Ministry of Health announced on September 7, 2026, that a jackal infected with rabies was discovered in the Upper Galilee town of Ma'ayan Baruch. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing, and as of now, no individuals who came into contact with the infected animal have been identified.

The ministry is urgently requesting that anyone who had contact with the infected jackal, or whose animals may have come into contact with it or any stray animals in the incident area between August 20 and September 3, 2026, contact the Safed Health Office immediately. Those outside of office hours or on weekends should go to the nearest hospital emergency room.

The ministry is also asking parents to inquire with their children about any contact with potentially sick animals and to report to the health office. Pet owners are advised to consult their local authority veterinarian to confirm their animals' vaccination status. Information about the incident should also be disseminated to visitors and residents in the area and nearby communities.

In a reminder, the Ministry of Health reiterated that anyone bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the affected area with soap and running water, disinfect it, and then proceed to a health office to determine if preventative rabies treatment is necessary.
