Israel Expels UK Representatives Amid Trade Sanctions Over Settlements

Israel announced severe retaliatory measures against the United Kingdom on Tuesday, following new sanctions imposed by the UK's Labour government targeting Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar declared the closure of the British Consulate in Jerusalem and the expulsion of British representatives involved in international aid to Gaza. Additionally, British activities training Palestinian Authority forces will be halted.

Sa'ar stated that these actions were a direct response to the UK's "escalation" against Israel, which included sanctions on companies and individuals connected to settlements, trade restrictions on settlement products, and expanded arms limitations. The British government had cited concerns that construction in the E1 area could impede the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Sa'ar rejected these claims, asserting that no new decision had been made regarding E1 and that the process began over a year ago. He sharply criticized the Labour government, accusing it of interfering in Israel's internal affairs and its election processes. Sa'ar suggested the British decision, made just before the Jewish New Year, was politically motivated to influence the upcoming Labour Party conference.

"We have nothing against the British people," Sa'ar emphasized, but argued that the current London government systematically acts against Israel, leaving Jerusalem "no choice but to respond." He warned that other countries acting against Israel could face similar repercussions, stating, "Those who act against Israel, Israel will act against them."

As part of the response, Israel will also deny entry to 12 British public figures and citizens deemed by the government to be involved in anti-Israel or antisemitic activities, or who deny Israel's right to exist. Sa'ar characterized the British measures as part of a series of decisions by the Labour government since taking office, including recognition of a Palestinian state and sanctions against Israeli officials.
