Israel Closes British Consulate in Jerusalem Over Sanctions

Israel has decided to close the British Consulate in Jerusalem in response to a series of "anti-Israeli" decisions by the UK government, including sanctions on Israeli settlers in the West Bank and arms restrictions. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the British measures are morally distorted, constitute blatant interference in Israel's internal affairs and election system, and are reminiscent of "the White Paper" historical policies. Israel also criticized Britain for ignoring Palestinian terrorism and its support mechanisms, such as "Pay for Slay" payments. The ministry detailed a pattern of negative British actions since the Labour government took office, including virtual recognition of a Palestinian state, suspension of defense export licenses, sanctions on Israeli citizens and ministers, and damage to security and economic cooperation.

In response, Israel will close the British Consulate in Jerusalem, asserting that unified Jerusalem is Israel's capital under full sovereignty and that foreign activities there require Israeli consent. Additionally, British representatives involved with the international aid center for Gaza in Kiryat Gat will be expelled. British activities training Palestinian Authority forces in the West Bank, coordinated by the British Support Team in Ramallah, will cease. Finally, Israel will deny entry to 12 British public figures and citizens involved in antisemitic or anti-Israeli activities, or who deny Israel's right to exist.
